Black Cottonwood

Populus trichocarpa

End buds are larger (greater than 1/2 inch) than any other poplar in the Sierra. 3-6 inch leaves, veiny undersides are paler than the shiny dark green top side. There are narrow projecting ridges along the twigs. Balsam Poplars have round or 4-angled, but not flattened, leaf stalks, and sticky buds with a balsamic odor.
