This evergreen oak has light gray, spreading trunks and a rounded crown of dark foliage. It grows in moist canyons throughout much of California and can live over three hundred years. The indigenous Pomo used the acorns to relieve coughs and sore throats. Wedges made of canyon oak were used by the pioneers to split redwood. Oak Trees and their shrub relatives breed promiscuously. You'll often find hybrid forms with mixed traits of several species.
