This endangered tree with it's cinnamon-red inner and fibrous, soft, purplish outer bark, furrowed as much as two feet on a massive trunk with short stout branches, and it's blue-green scale-like leaves must be seen to be appreciated.
To sprout the seeds, place fresh seeds in a plastic bag filled with moist but not wet mix of 1/3 sand, 1/3 soil, 1/3 humus, and refrigerate for 2 1/2 months, and then plant the seeds in a deep container with soil mix kept moist. Provide partial shade for the first year. Sequoia prefers unexposed moist areas at 5000-8500 feet elevation.
