Pacific Madrone

Arbutus menziesii

Pacific Madrone bark This 40-120 foot tree has one of the most beautiful and distinctive of tree barks. In early summer most of the bark peels, leaving a smooth and pale green surface that soon becomes a rich red-brown color, and the trunk often acquires an interesting gnarled form. The thick and leathery leaves are dark green on top and the undersides are pale green. In the spring it bears small bell-shaped flowers that mature into orange berries in late summer.
To sprout the seeds, place fresh seeds in a plastic bag filled with moist but not wet mix of 1/3 sand, 1/3 soil, 1/3 humus, and refrigerate for 3 months, and then plant the seeds in a deep metal or biodegradable container with soil mix kept moist. Plant the entire can when ready and let it rust or decompose away. Pacific Madrone does not tolerate root disturbance.
